There is one thing that I can never understand about this country of ours and the inhabitants thereof. Many years ago our government passed laws regarding discrimination based on race and national origin. Before that time there was a majority of different races living in this great Country of ours. I can remember filling out forms and the classification of race being black, white, Hispanic, other. Meaning that their were people, immigrants, who came to this country from other places that were not born here and we needed to know their race for what ever reason.
The problem for me comes in when somewhere along the line we came up with the classification of "African-American", and "Mexican-American". Several people in the past have asked me about this and I really do not have a answer. See, I do not understand how anyone can be a national of two countries at once. Is your heritage Mexico, Africa, or American? There is only one way I see it. That is that we can only be from one or the other.
My family would actually be Irish-American but I am an American. The reason being is that all my relatives that came here from Ireland are dead and gone and all the generations that are alive here in this country were born here making them Americans.
According to science, and the bible, all men came from one continent. Far be it from me to know which continent God placed Adam and Eve on or for the science definition I really do not know where man actually evolved. The point is quite simple. No matter how you look at it all man-kind came from one starting place or origin and we are all going to end up in the same place which is death.
That said, then how can we as a people create separate races of individuals just because of where they think they came from? If you were born in and came to America from Africa then you are an African Immigrant. If your relatives came here from Africa and were blessed with you in the states that makes you an American. It is the same no matter what country your relatives came from if you were born in that country then that is your nationality and the description of your race. If you were born in America you are American.
To me it seems that this is just a way to keep a racial bias in the air. This is no different than shouting racial slurs at someone because they look different. We are all Americans. Not this type and that type. The only choices we should have when choosing race or national origin should be American or Immigrant.
