Native American History Women

March is Women’s History Month and this year’s theme is “Women Change America.”

This year I thought I’d help you change American by providing you with links that explain how to locate your female ancestors. As you know, if you have been doing genealogy work for any length of time, our women ancestors are almost invisible. I’m going to rectify this situation by showing you how to find those illusive women.

The best way to locate your women ancestors is by discovering their maiden name through marriage records. For more detailed information read: Chasing Women: Marriage Records and Their Value in Locating Female Ancestors.

After marriage records the next best way to locate a woman’s maiden name is on birth records. These are sometimes hard to find if you don’t have the supporting information. For more detailed information read: Chasing women: How Birth Records Can Help in Locating Female Ancestors.http://www.heritagequest.com/magonline/html/l_010605.html

After birth records you can look into Military Records for a woman’s maiden name. This will help in a lot of cases. For more detailed information read: Finding Your Female Ancestors with Military Records.http://www.heritagequest.com/magonline/html/l_010626.html

Your next step is to locate death records. This will sometimes list the maiden name. For more detailed information read: Using Death Records to Locate the Ladies in your Lineage. http://www.heritagequest.com/magonline/html/l_010612.html

Our next stop is the census records. Here is a wonderful article on how to use them correctly. For more information read: Census records - Locating women in the census.http://www.heritagequest.com/magonline/html/l_010619.html

Next you would look to cemeteries and tombstone inscriptions along with church records, letters and diaries.
